When it comes to highly anticipated albums, this was definitely no.1 on our list for 2010. After releasing a couple of singles last month and some short 1-minute leaks from each track, finally the time has come. The third album from the best group to rock this world the last few years is finally here. Arcade Fire are right on time, precisely three years after their sophomore Neon Bible (and six from their debut Funeral), The Suburbs is hitting the stores on August 2nd in the UK and on August 3rd in the US and Canada on Merge Records. It's Montreal time again!

Eight different covers, 16 tracks and 63 minutes and 57 seconds were more than enough to convince us from the start. The Suburbs is exactly what the title suggests, a trip back to childhood and how things have changed since then. The tone has been set since the release of first song Suburbs, which incidentally is one of the weakest songs on the album. What follows is a musical windmill with songs of things we left behind, things we can't keep away from and how our memories have shaped our present. The album has many references/influences, from Tom Petty to Neil Young and from Manic Street Preachers to even Depeche Mode, but it all blends together so perfectly that it can be seen as yet another memory trick.

Compared to their previous two albums, I would say this could prove as their masterpiece, although I need a few months before I dethrone Funeral. All tracks create the homely feeling of where we grew up, providing a masterfully crafted trip, with binding tracks like Rococo or Month of May providing smart tempo changes to . I also love how most tracks are slowly built, allowing enough space for melodies and lyrics to sink in, a sign perhaps of the band maturing. I can't help but rate this with 5/5 from the start. There are so many tracks (Modern Man, Empty Room, Half Light II, We Used to Wait) on this record that I know I'll alternate as my favorites, so many tunes that I will rediscover in months to come. By far the album of the year!
