Tennis between Young & Old

Strangely enough, I have never mentioned Tennis before on Athens66 (with the exception of featuring one of their videos in our videowall back at the end of July 2010). They are a husband-and-wife duo from Denver, Colorado. Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley formed the band in 2010 and released their first EP during the summer of the same year. Their debut LP came at the begininning of 2011, titled Cape Dory, and a was a joyful bedroom pop album that I absolutely loved. A bit over a year l...

Write about Love is the eight studio album of one the our most loved bands of all time. It's been 14 years since Belle and Sebastian turned our world upside down with Tigermilk and made Glasgow one of our favorite music cities. Since then, they've produced amazing albums and endless songs that have marked our lives. Their last album in 2006 The Life Pursuit was nothing special and four years later we were hoping for something better. Unfortunately, it seems we are asking for something that si...

Arcade Fire take on The Suburbs

When it comes to highly anticipated albums, this was definitely no.1 on our list for 2010. After releasing a couple of singles last month and some short 1-minute leaks from each track, finally the time has come. The third album from the best group to rock this world the last few years is finally here. Arcade Fire are right on time, precisely three years after their sophomore Neon Bible (and six from their debut Funeral), The Suburbs is hitting the stores on August 2nd in the UK and on August 3...

Menomena set their Mines

Menomena are one of those bands that have always been overlooked (with their side/solo projects Lacktherof and Ramona Falls enjoying more fame). The trio from Portland are now on their 10th year together and after 3 amazing albums and 3 years in the making of, are finally releasing their newest work titled Mines and out on the 27th of July on Barsuk records. Until then you can stream all the tracks from NPR. I'll say it up front. Mines is simply a great album. Opening track Queen Black Acid s...

Naomi and The Big Shapes

Bernd Lechler and Nico Tobias Wirtz are the electronic duo from Berlin under the name Naomi. They've already released four albums since they first formed the band back in 1996 and are now introducing their fifth, titled The Big Shapes, released under Mole Listening Pearls label. I've got a mixed feeling for this ablum. While some tracks like Candy Floss, Note we Never Play or opener Dragon Tree are really catchy, with solid dance beats that are bound to get stuck in your head, others like Thi...

Maps & Atlases release a Perch Patchwork

Maps & Atlases are one of the most musically talented bands out there. They hail from Chicago and so far have released two EPs, where they showcased their amazing techniques in mostly math rock tunes with elements of folk. Finally, after 4 years together, they released their debut album titled Perch Patchwork, out on Barsuk Records. As opposed to what most people expected, their debut is much more on the pop side rather than math rock. This makes their work much more accessible and also shift...

Wolf Parade are back from Expo 86

Wolf Parade are one of those groups that although everyone likes noone thinks of them as their favorite band (or at least noone from the people I know). Perhaps it's time to reconsider! Two years after their previous masterpiece At Mount Zoomer they are back (always on Sub Pop records) with Expo 86, which is being released on June 29th. This album is less complex than Mount Zoomer but a lot more fun. From the rushing beat of the first track Cloud Shadow on the Mountain, the pace is given for ...

Monika – Exit

We've been waiting for this almost 2 years now and finally Monika released her follow-up to Avatar. This is quite a tricky review since I'm a big fan of her, but I'll try to be as fair as I can. First things first, the album is titled Exit and is availble through Archangel Music for almost two weeks now. So what do we make of it? I tried to give the album enough time to grow on me and it kind of did. It may not be as spectacular or catchy as her debut, mainly due to the lack of instant hit ...

She and Him are back with Volume Two

I delayed reviewing this both because of this week's sickness and due to the fact that I wanted to give it a couple of more spins. The follow-up album of She & Him is finally here, elegantly titled Volume Two.She & Him - ThievesShe & Him - In the SunTo be honest, Zooey could have released Christmas carols and I would still dig it! To no surprise, the second album continues the 50's sweet melodies exactly where Volume One ended. It is more or less the same ingredients, Zooey's sweet voice and M.W...

Mumford and Sons … please oh please … Sigh no More

Sigh No More is the debut album from London-based quartet Mumford & Sons, which has caused a big controversy amongst bloggers in the past few weeks. The album has been out since October of 2009 in the UK but was recently (February 2010) released in the States. The controversy was brought on by Pitchfork of'course (once again), which rated the album with a mere 2.1 out of 10. So what do we think?I never miss a chance to dismiss Pitchfork, but on this occasion I will have to agree with them. T...

The Liars are back with their crappy Sisterworld

We've been receiving and getting our hands on numerous great releases in the past 2 months, so I thought I would continue on the same track when I got the new Liars album. How wrong could I ever be? I don't care what Pitchfork and the other non-sense critics have to say about their latest album Sisterworld. I simply hate it. Enough with the 'We all want to be the next Animal Collective' bullshit. I want music that I can hear over and over again and not some crappy experimental shit that only cri...

Titus Andronicus go way back to The Monitor

When Titus released their debut The Airing of Grievances two years ago I was totally drawn into their mix of punk and shoegaze. It was a band that simply combined most of the elements I love from both genres in a totally unique way. So it is fair to say, I was more than excited to hear of their latest release titled The Monitor (out from XL Recordings). This one is however a bit different.Titus Andronicus - A More Perfect UnionTitus Andronicus - Four Score and Seven (part one)Titus Andronicus - ...

Caribou is back for a Swim

We finally found the time to listen to the whole new album by Caribou titled Swim. We've already heard and seen Odessa endless times (it's simply that good), so we weren't surprised by the fact that the rest of the tracks are equally good. Ambient sounds, sporadic lyrics and groovy beats make up the scene for a sound that reminds a lot of the good old days of Royksopp. The record is out on the 20th of April from Merge label. Go out and buy it!Caribou - SunCaribu - OdessaArtist.Site
